FORMER QB AARON GARCIA EARNS AFL HONORS

2/15/2006

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. (www.newyorkdragons.com) --- Former Sacramento State quarterback and current New York Dragon Aaron Garcia was named the AFL Offensive Player of the Week and the AFL Writers Association (AFLWA) Player of the Week for his performance in last Saturday''s victory at Utah, 84-81.

In the game, Garcia threw for 10 touchdowns, one short of the AFL-record of 11 he set on July 7, 2001. He also completed 24 of 26 passes for 354 yards and had no interceptions. Garcia also had a perfect passer rating of 158.3.

"It''s a definite honor that I accept on behalf of the whole team," said Garcia, who''s in his 12th AFL season. "You don''t get these awards on a losing effort. It was a team effort and a team victory and I appreciate it greatly."

The game itself saw two AFL records broken thanks to Garcia''s outstanding performance. He and Utah Blaze QB Joe Germaine had a combined record-breaking 20 passing touchdowns and both teams combined for a new record of 24 total touchdowns in the game. The previous records held were 19 combined passing touchdowns recorded on June 20, 1997 when New Jersey (10) faced Texas (9), and 23 combined total touchdowns recorded on two occasions, April 13, 2003 when Arizona (12) faced Los Angeles (11), and April 3, 2004 when Los Angeles (12) faced Austin (11).

The contest was also the second highest-scoring game in AFL history with 165 combined points scored. The Dragons were also victorious in the highest scoring contest on July 7, 2001 when they beat the Carolina Cobras 99-68 for a combined score of 167.

Garcia is the all-time leading touchdown passer with 745. Since the beginning of the 2004 season, Garcia has thrown the most touchdowns of any AFL quarterback with 201. He is also second in career passing yards and completions with 35,518 and 3,016, respectively.
