LOGUE CONTINUES POSTSEASON ACCOLADES WITH ALL-AMERICA HONOR

1/9/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Sacramento State senior linebacker Matt Logue headed a list of three Hornets who earned postseason honors. Logue was named honorable mention All-America and first team all-West Region by Football Gazette. Junior Kris Daniels was also on the West Region first team as a return specialist and sophomore safety Brett Shelton garnered second team all-region honors.

A four-year starter, Logue led the Big Sky with 105 tackles, including 14.5 for loss. He ended his Sacramento State career as the school’s all-time leader in tackles-for-loss (46.5) and fumble recoveries (five). Logue also ranks second all-time with 306 career tackles. Following the season, he was named first team all-Big Sky and was tri-Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

The Grass Valley, Calif., native became the first Hornet to earn the defensive award since the school joined the Big Sky in 1996. In fact, former All-America running back Charles Roberts is the only player to earn any of the Big Sky’s football MVP awards as he was named Offensive MVP in 1999.

Logue becomes the ninth Hornet to be named All-America in the school’s Div. I-AA era (1993-pres.). In 2004, Fred Amey was named to the AFCA first team as a return specialist and cornerback Ramon Payne was placed on the third team by Football Gazette.

One season after being named first team Freshmen All-American, Shelton continued to shine in the secondary. The Bakersfield, Calif., native finished second on the team with 83 tackles. Shelton, who was named second team all-Big Sky for the second consecutive season, added 3.5 tackles-for-loss and had a pair of interceptions.

After taking over the kick returning duties midway through the season, Daniels ended the year as the leader in the Big Sky. The South San Francisco, Calif., native averaged 27.5 yards per return — the second best in school history. He also enjoyed his best season at running back, amassing 356 yards and scoring four touchdowns.
