The Sacramento State football team returns to the friendly confines of Hornet Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 22, as the team hosts Idaho State. The game against the Bengals kicks off at 6:05 p.m.
The contest can be heard locally on KTKZ 1380 AM and 105.5 FM with Jason Ross handling the play-by-play and Steve McElroy adding the color commentary. San Jose SaberCat head coach, and Hornet alum, Darren Arbet will serve as the sideline reporter. For those outside the greater Sacramento area, the game will also be available on the internet at www.hornetsports.com.
The Hornets enter the game with a 2-5 overall record following a 26-14 loss at Weber State on Oct. 15. However, Sacramento State remains in the Big Sky Conference hunt with a 1-2 league mark. Heading into this week’s game, no team in the Big Sky is undefeated and the Hornets are just 1.5 games behind Eastern Washington.
Idaho State is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in Big Sky games. The Bengals have dropped their last two contests to Montana State (30-28) and Montana (32-10) but are the only conference school to defeat Eastern Washington this season (34-30). ISU is coming off a bye week and has not competed since Oct. 8.
In last week’s game at Weber State, the Hornets fell behind early, 7-0, but rallied to take a 14-7 halftime lead and held on for a 14-13 advantage following the third quarter. However, the fourth quarter was not kind to the team as three fumbles led to 13 Wildcat points — and eventually, a 26-14 setback.
Chris Hurd threw for 165 yards and scored on two rushing touchdowns but was also sacked five times. Ryan Mole amassed 71 rushing yards but had his 100-yard game streak snapped at two. Tight end Tommy Briggs was the leading receiver with four catches for 51 yards.
Sacramento State leads the all-time series 5-4 but the two teams have alternated victories over the last six meetings. The home team has controlled the series, winning eight of the nine meetings. In fact, Idaho State has never won at Hornet Stadium in four tries. In its last trip, ISU entered the game ranked 13th in Div. I-AA but was handed a 47-21 defeat on Sept. 21, 2003.
