FRED AMEY SIGNS FREE AGENT CONTRACT WITH THE 49ERS

4/28/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State wide receiver Fred Amey signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers, it was officially announced today. Amey will report to the team’s mini-camp beginning on Thursday, May 5, in Santa Clara, Calif.

“Following the draft I had offers from several teams,” Amey said. “However, I believe that the 49ers are the best fit for me at this time.”

The contract capped a magnificent collegiate career for Amey. The Union City, Calif., native was named to the AFCA All-America team following his senior season and was a three-time first team all-Big Sky Conference selection. This past year, Amey also participated in the East-West Shrine Game.

During his career, Amey became just the second player in Div. I-AA history to record 4,000 career receiving yards and 6,000 career all-purpose yards. His career total of 4,049 receiving yards ranks fourth in Div. I-AA history and is the top mark in the Big Sky record book. His 248 receptions also rank in the Div. I-AA top 10 and are the second most in league history.

A four-year starter, Amey caught a pass in each of his 42 games. This past season, he set the school record with 76 receptions and ranked second in school history with 1,186 receiving yards. He also broke the Sacramento State mark for single-game receptions with 15 grabs at Eastern Washington. The previous record of 14 had stood since 1968.

As a return specialist, Amey averaged nine yards per punt return and 21.2 yards per kickoff return. The Union City, Calif., native is also the only player in school history to return two punts for touchdowns during his career.

Amey becomes the sixth Hornet player currently on an NFL roster. That list is comprised of defensive back Eddie Canonico (Kansas City), offensive lineman Marko Cavka (New York Jets), long snapper Lonie Paxton (New England), quarterback Ricky Ray (New York Jets) and fullback Daimon Shelton (Buffalo).
