FOOTBALL NAMES SCOTT CRINER QUARTERBACKS COACH

2/24/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team announced the hiring of Scott Criner as the team’s quarterbacks coach, it was announced today by head coach Steve Mooshagian.

Criner comes to Sacramento State after serving as the head coach of Timberline High School in Boise, Idaho, for the past three seasons. While with the Wolves, he led the team to a 17-11 overall record. He also produced the school’s first winning season (5-4 in 2002) and earned its first playoff victory (2003).

“I am very excited to have someone with Scott’s experience join our staff,” Mooshagian said. “I have known him for years and he has always been a guy I wanted to have on my staff. He has had numerous opportunities to go to other schools but felt like Sacramento State was a good fit for him and his family.”

Prior to taking the job at Timberline, Criner was the receivers coach for the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL from 2000-01. His collegiate experience consists of a three-year stint at Northern Arizona (1998-2000) where he was the Lumberjacks’ receivers coach, passing game coordinator and recruiting coordinator. Criner has also coached at Boise State (1997, 1981-83), Navy (1995), Pacific (1989-94) and Cincinnati (1983-89).

During his first tenure at Boise State, he was the recruiting coordinator and also coached tight ends, tackles and the secondary. Criner moved to Cincinnati and was the Bearcats’ passing game coordinator in his final two years. He had also coached quarterbacks, receivers and running backs and was the recruiting coordinator.

Criner began his career at Pacific as the team’s running backs coach. He was later elevated to receivers coach and passing game coordinator. Following his time at UOP, Criner spent one season at Navy as the recruiting coordinator and running backs coach.

He returned to BSU in 1995 as the running backs and tight ends coach before taking the job at NAU in 1998.

A graduate of Boise State, Criner earned a bachelor of arts in history.

No stranger to football, Criner comes from a family full of coaches. His father, Herb, is currently an associate athletics director at Boise State and a former assistant for the Broncos. His uncle, Jim, is currently a scout with the Kansas City Chiefs. Jim was also the head coach at Boise State where he led the school to the 1980 NCAA Div. I-AA title. He later coached at Iowa State and professionally for the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe and the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL.
