LAS VEGAS — Three Sacramento State football players were named to the 2004 I-AA.org Freshmen All-America Team, it was announced today. The group is highlighted by strong safety Brett Shelton who was named to the first team. Running back Ryan Mole and free safety Brent Webber each earned honorable mention honors.Shelton started all 11 games during his first season with the team. The Stockdale, Calif., native recorded 83 total tackles, including three for loss. He tallied at least four tackles in every game and ended the year with three-straight double-figure performances. Against Montana State, he recorded a career-high 12 tackles, including eight solo stops. He added 10 tackles at Montana the following week and ended the year with 11 stops against Cal Poly. Following the season, he was named second team all-Big Sky Conference.
Mole rushed for a team-high 858 yards in nine games. The Santa Maria, Calif., native scored five touchdowns, including an 87-yard score against Montana State and a 63-yard touchdown at UC Davis. After being held to 41 yards at Montana in the season opener, Mole recorded 114 yards against Southern Utah and 132 yards at UC Davis in the next two games. He later added a career-high 245 yards in the win over Montana State and 176 yards at Montana. Mole averaged 97.0 yards per game in his nine contests. That total included the 12 yards he had against Cal Poly before leaving the game with a rib injury. If you exclude the Cal Poly game, he averaged 108.8 yards per game. Mole was named one of three Newcomers of the Year by the Big Sky and also earned honorable mention honors.
Webber teamed with Shelton in the defensive backfield for most of the season. The strong safety started eight of the 10 games in which he appeared and ended the year with 56 tackles. His best showings came at Nevada and Eastern Washington where he had 11 tackles in each game. The Sanger, Calif., native also forced a fumble during the year and recovered two. At Idaho State, Webber returned a fumble 35 yards for a score. Like Mole, he also earned honorable mention all-league honors.
