WACO, Texas — Sacramento State wide receiver Fred Amey was named first team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association, it was announced today. Amey was selected as the return specialist and is one of just 25 Div. I-AA players to be named All-America by the AFCA.The AFCA has named a Div. I-AA All-America team annually since 1979. The selection committee is comprised of three head coaches from each of the AFCA’s nine districts.
Amey becomes just the second player in school history to make the AFCA team. Charles Roberts was named in 1998 after leading Div. I-AA in rushing. Amey was named honorable mention All-America as a receiver in 2002 by The Football Gazette.
During his career, Amey became just the second player in Div. I-AA history to record 4,000 career receiving yards and 6,000 career all-purpose yards. His career total of 4,049 receiving yards ranks fourth in Div. I-AA history and is the top mark in the Big Sky Conference record book. His 248 receptions also rank in the Div. I-AA top 10 and are the second most in league history.
A four-year starter, Amey caught a pass in each of his 42 games. This past season, he set the school record with 76 receptions and ranked second in school history with 1,186 receiving yards. He also broke the Sacramento State mark for single-game receptions with 15 grabs at Eastern Washington. The previous record of 14 had stood since 1968.
As a return specialist, Amey averaged nine yards per punt return and 21.2 yards per kickoff return. The Union City, Calif., native is also the only player in school history to return two punts for touchdowns during his career.
Since Sacramento State moved to Div. I-AA in 1993, seven Hornet players have been named All-America. Linebacker Ryland Wickman was named third team in 1998 by the Associated Press. That same season, Roberts was first team by the AFCA and second team by the Associated Press and The Sports Network. In 1999, Roberts was named first team by the AP, The Sports Network and Teamlink.com. Offensive lineman Jon Osterhout joined Roberts on the first team of The Sports Network and Teamlink.com and was second team by Associated Press. Tight end Chris Kelly earned Teamlink.com second-team honors that same season. In 2000, linebacker Anthony Daisley was a third-team selection by Associated Press and center Terence Wagner was honorable mention the following year.
