SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State wide receiver Fred Amey has accepted an invitation to play in the 80th-Annual East West Shrine Game, it was announced today. The game, which pits the best collegiate seniors in the country against each other, will be played on Jan. 15, 2005, at SBC Park in San Francisco.Amey becomes the fourth Hornet in school history to be invited to the game. He joins running backs Troy Mills and Charles Roberts who played in 1991 and 2000, respectively, and offensive lineman Marko Cavka who played last year.
The Union City, Calif., native has been a four-year starter for the Hornets and holds nearly every school career receiving record. Amey has caught a pass in all 40 of his collegiate games and recently became just the second player in the history of Div. I-AA to record 3,000 receiving yards and 6,000 all-purpose yards. With two games remaining on the 2004 schedule, Amey has 3,800 career receiving yards, 231 career receptions and 26 career touchdowns. He has also amassed 6,094 all-purpose yards.
Amey currently ranks ninth in Div. I-AA history in career receiving yards and needs just 48 yards to become the all-time leading receiver in the Big Sky Conference.
This year’s East West Shrine Game will feature head coaches Mike Riley and Joe Tiller. Tiller, the head coach of Purdue, will guide the East team while Riley, Oregon State’s head coach, will lead the West squad. Historically, the game has been a showcase for future NFL players. There are over 300 active NFL players who played in the game, including 24 in the Super Bowl and 13 in the Pro Bowl this past season.
All proceeds from the East West Shrine Game support children who receive medical care, at no cost, from the 22 Shriner’s Hospitals for Children throughout North America.
