SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- All-America candidate Fred Amey caught six passes for 91 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Sacramento State offense in its first scrimmage of the spring season. The offense struggled to find a rhythm on its first eight plays. The scrimmage began with a fumbled flea-flicker between running back Josh Farrell and quarterback Brad Tredway. Following a short completion to Amey and a sack, Farrell fumbled on a run around the left side.
The offense began to take form behind the legs of running back Kris Daniels. The sophomore gained 11 yards on his third carry of the game. On the following play, Tredway found Amey for a 27-yard completion. Wide receiver Jon Williams kept the drive alive with a pair of 10-yard grabs and Tredway rushed for an 11-yard gain up the middle for a first down. Tredway then hit Amey on a slant at the goal line for the first touchdown of the scrimmage. Tredway completed his first drive going 5-for-7 for 54 yards.
Redshirt freshman Crosby Wehr led the offense for the next six plays. The Oakmont HS graduate attempted just one pass during the series while the offense was limited to 14 rushing yards. The drive featured a sack from junior college transfer Jacob Houston.
Tredway returned to go 6-of-11 on his next series. After having his five of his first six passes fall incomplete, Tredway connected with redshirt freshman Jordan Farrell for a 13-yard gain. Kelly Micco, who has made the transition from defensive end to tight end this spring, followed with an acrobatic 20-yard catch on the right sideline. Three plays later, Amey caught his second touchdown. On the play, the Union City, Calif., beat the secondary and reached over his shoulder to pull it in just inside the left-front pylon.
Wehr guided the unit to its third score with a 14-play series. The early portion of the drive was highlighted by a 19-yard rush from Pete Hingano and a 17-yard catch from Josh Farrell. Farrell then recorded a 5-yard and 4-yard rush to move the ball down the 10-yard line. Wehr called his own number with a draw up the middle to get inside the 1-yard line. The offense appeared to have a touchdown on a rush up the middle from Hingano but head coach Steve Mooshagian placed the ball back at the one. Two more rushes from Hingano came up short before Wehr scored on a sneak.
The final drive was won by the defense when sophomore Stephone Paige II, intercepted Tredway in the end zone and returned the ball 98 yards. The cornerback just missed a touchdown as he was tackled by Tredway in the corner.
Tredway finished the day 12-of-21 for 164 yards and two touchdowns while Wehr was 1-of-4 from 17 yards. Daniels led a balanced rushing attack with 32 yards on 10 carries. Hingano added 25 yards on six rushes while Josh Farrell had eight rushes for 19 yards.
Amey’s 91 receiving yards were the best on the team followed by Jon Williams and Kelly Micco who each had 20. Hingano and Josh Farrell each had one grab for 17 yards.
The defense forced two turnovers (one interception, one fumble) and recorded eight tackles-for-loss.
The team will hold its second of three scrimmages next Friday, April 30, at the practice field. The scrimmage is scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m. The annual spring game will take place on Friday, May 7, at Oakmont HS.
