FOOTBALL BEGINS SPRING PRACTICE

4/13/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team opened its spring practice on Monday, April 12. The team will hold 15 practices, culminating with the spring game on Friday, May 7.

All practices are scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. and will take place on Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays. The team will also have three scrimmages. The first will take place on Friday, April 23. The second will be held on Friday, April 30, while the third will be the spring game on May 7.

Sacramento State returns 35 players from last season, including 18 starters. The offense will be led by returning starters Fred Amey, Ryan Leadingham and Tyronne Gross. Amey has been named first team all-Big Sky Conference each of the last two seasons and returns as one of top receivers in NCAA Div. I-AA.

Leadingham will see limited duty in the spring as he continues to recover from an arm injury which ended his 2003 season after just five games. The senior holds nearly every career passing record at Sacramento State and has been the starting quarterback each of the past three seasons.

Like Leadingham, Gross is also recovering from an injury. The Stockton, Calif., native led the team with 812 rushing yards last season despite playing in just eight games. Gross averaged 101.5 yards per game and scored eight rushing touchdowns.
