SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Phil Davis resigned as Sacramento State’s offensive coordinator, it was announced today. Davis had been with the team since March of 2003.“We want to thank Phil for his contribution to Hornet football,” head coach Steve Mooshagian said. “He helped me stabilize and develop our program.
“This was not a surprise to me. We have talked about this since the end of recruiting. Phil is a lifelong friend and I gave him my blessing to do whatever he thought was best for his family. The decision was very tough for him, but I am certain it is the right thing to do.”
Under Davis, Sacramento State produced numerous offensive records in the opening games of the 2003 season. However, injuries to starting quarterback Ryan Leadingham, All-American wide receiver Fred Amey and starting running back Tyronne Gross limited the team’s productivity at the end of the season.
In the second game of the year against Saint Mary’s, the offense accounted for 46 of the team’s 69 points and amassed 419 yards of total offense. Just two weeks later against Idaho State, Leadingham was named National Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 366 yards and a school-record six touchdowns in the win over the Bengals. In that same game, Gross rushed for 240 yards and a score. As a team, the Hornets totalled 641 yards of offense and averaged 8.4 yards per play.
Mooshagian will take over the role as primary play caller for the offense. Current assistant Craig Young will be promoted to offensive coordinator while continuing to work with the running backs. Shawn Kraft, the team’s special team’s coordinator, will add the role of quarterbacks. Assistant head coach Angus McClure and Ken Foersch, who joined the staff in February, will share the coaching duties on the offensive line.
