FOOTBALL SIGNS 23 PLAYERS; GROUP JOINS 10 MIDYEAR TRANSFERS

2/4/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team announced today that 23 players have signed agreements to play for the Hornets this upcoming season. The group, which consists of 18 high school seniors and five junior college transfers, will enroll at the University this fall and will be eligible to compete during the 2004 season. The group joins 10 midyear transfers who are currently enrolled.

“This is an outstanding class with a lot of impact players,” head coach Steve Mooshagian said. “We filled our needs in all the necessary areas and we will continue to recruit. I believe this is one of the top recruiting classes in the Big Sky.

“I am very proud of our coaches. They did an outstanding job combing the state of California and getting some talented players.”

The class is comprised of 10 defensive players, nine offensive players, three players who can play on both sides of the ball and one kicker. Included in the list are two Sacramento-area products — Kevin Hall (Bella Vista HS) and Mike Brannon (Cordova HS). The majority of the players come from the San Joaquin Valley, with 12 hailing from hometowns between Bakersfield and Stockton. Seven players are from Southern California while the other four are Northern California residents.

The midyear signees include three players who transferred from Div. I-A institutions. All 10 are currently enrolled at the University for the spring semester and will practice with the team.

“Overall, we are very pleased with this group of players,” Mooshagian said. “All of these guys had an opportunity to go somewhere else but chose to come to Sacramento State because they felt they could contribute to what we are doing.”

The three four-year transfers are comprised of Chuck Asiodu, James Cummings and Allen Mackey. The junior college transfers include four defensive players and a quarterback.

“We felt that we needed to bolster our junior class,” Mooshagian said. “Last season, we had to rely on a lot of true freshman to help our depth. These players will all fill those holes and make us a stronger team.”

Below is a list of the entire recruiting class. Biographies on the players follow.
