SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Quarterbacks Ryan Leadingham, Blake Mori and Dustin Hagens combined to throw for 365 yards as the offense defeated the defense in the annual Green-Gold Game. The contest, which had a scoring system allowing both the offense and defense to score, marked the final scrimmage of the spring season for the Sacramento State football team.Leadingham completed 10-of-12 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns while guiding the first team offense. The junior-to-be, however was intercepted one time. Mori led all QBs with 173 passing yards, while completing 13-of-18 attempts. The Jesuit HS graduate also had two touchdowns. Hagens was 2-of-5 for 28 yards and had one interception.
The trio’s favorite target was Fred Amey. The receiver, who led the Big Sky in receiving yardage and receptions per game last season, grabbed seven passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Parillo added four receptions while Kenan Smith had three grabs for 48 yards. Hagens also saw some time at wide receiver, catching two passes for 49 yards. Redshirt freshmen Brian Bell and Brandon Lewis each caught a TD pass.
The rushing game was paced by Tyronne Gross. The Stockton, Calif., native had 11 carries for 49 yards and a score. Redshirt freshman Kris Daniels led all players with 13 attempts. Daniels tallied 45 yards, including a 10-yard score.
The defense limited the offense to 108 rushing yards on 43 attempts (2.5 per carry). Helping that effort were four sacks. Kelly Micco recorded two sacks, while converted tight end Phil Gratsinopoulos, converted running back Royce Barber and returning starter Eric Broden combined on the other two.
Linebacker Ryan Kroeker led the team with seven tackles, including three for a loss of 12 yards. Kroeker, who ended last season with the fifth highest amount of tackles in the Big Sky Conference, recorded four solo stops and three assists on Friday night. Redshirt freshman Tom Hoffart and walk-on Steve Roberson each had six tackles.
Sacramento State will begin its regular-season practice during the first week of August. The Hornets open the 2003 season at Div. I-A Oregon State on Aug. 30. Sacramento State’s first home game will come against Saint Mary’s on Sept. 6.
