SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team will take its spring football show on the road this weekend, as the Hornets will hold a scrimmage at St. Mary’s High School in Stockton, Calif. The intrasquad game will be begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, and is free to the public. The first 100 fans will also receive a free Sacramento State T-shirt.Sacramento State is under the leadership of new head coach Steve Mooshagian. Mooshagian, who was hired on Jan. 15, came to the Hornets after spending the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. Prior to working in the NFL, Mooshagian coached at Fresno State, Nevada and Pittsburgh.
The Sacramento State offense will be led by returning quarterback Ryan Leadingham. A two-year starter, Leadingham has already set numerous career records for the Hornets. Wide receiver Fred Amey is also back for his third season. Last year, Amey earned honorable mention All-America honors as well as being named first team all-Big Sky Conference.
Stockton native Tyrone Gross enters spring practice as the starter at tailback. Gross compiled 420 yards and five rushing touchdowns while playing in nine games last season.
Defensively, the Hornets are led by a pair of linebackers. Senior Park McAllister is back for his fifth season after a shoulder injury limited him to just one game in 2002. Ryan Kroeker also returns after leading the team with 105 tackles during his first year at Sacramento State.
The Hornets’ spring schedule is comprised of 15 practices, including four scrimmages. The team began drills on March 17 and held its first scrimmage this past Saturday (March 22). The Hornets will also hold a scrimmage at Granite Bay High School in Roseville, Calif., on April 5, before ending the spring with the annual Green-Gold Game on Friday, April 11, in Hornet Stadium.
