FOOTBALL SIGNS THREE LOCAL PREPS

2/26/2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team completed its 2003 recruiting class by signing three Sacramento-area players to National Letters of Intent, it was announced today. Oakmont quarterback Crosby Wehr, Laguna Creek defensive back Stephone Paige II and Granite Bay wide receiver Billy White join 13 players that signed with the Hornets on Feb. 5. The 16 newcomers will all enroll at the University in the fall of 2003.

“We are very excited to have three local players of this caliber to come play at Sacramento State,” head coach Steve Mooshagian said. “All three of these athletes are capable of making an impact with this team in the future.”

Wehr posted impressive numbers in his senior season at Oakmont HS. The quarterback earned honorable mention all-city and first team all-Pioneer Valley League honors after throwing for 2,370 yards and leading the Vikings to a 9-3 overall record. That same season, Wehr was 115-for-218 (52.8 completion percentage) with 27 touchdowns and a 118 quarterback rating. He ranked third in the Sacramento area among players from all-divisions in total yardage, touchdowns and QB rating. He was also impressive on the ground where he amassed 230 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on 67 carries. Wehr also served as Oakmont’s kicker where he converted 39 PATs and two field goals.

Stephone Paige II is the second player from Laguna Creek HS to sign with Sacramento State this season, joining tight end Zach Jiru. Paige played both wide receiver and defensive back for the Cardinals last season but will focus his attentions on defense at the collegiate level. As a senior, Paige recorded three interceptions and 32 tackles while helping Laguna Creek to a 7-3-1 overall mark. He is the son of former NFL wide receiver Stephone Paige. The elder Paige teamed with Steve Mooshagian as a receiver at Fresno State.

Standing at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, Billy White will be a large target for Hornet quarterbacks. Following his senior season at Granite Bay HS, White was named second team all-city by The Sacramento Bee and first team all-Sierra Foothill League. That year, he grabbed 46 receptions for 877 yards and nine touchdowns, and helped guide the Grizzlies to an 11-2 overall record and a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II title game. His yardage total ranked second among Div. II players while his receiving touchdowns were third. His biggest game came against Del Oro where he had 231 yards on nine catches (25.7 yards per catch). White joins Colby Culbertson as the first Granite Bay players to commit to Sacramento State.
