SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State Director of Athletics Terry Wanless announced today that John Volek will not return for the 2003 season as the team’s head football coach.“No one can question John’s loyalty, hard work and dedication,” Wanless said. “He took over the program at a difficult time in the program’s history and has laid a solid foundation.
“The program has taken many positive strides under John’s leadership, but it is my opinion that a change is needed in order for the football program to take the next step in its development.”
In eight years as Sacramento State’s head football coach, Volek produced a 31-56-1 overall record as well as a 16-37 Big Sky Conference mark (1995-02). This past season, the Hornets finished the year 5-7 overall and in a four-way tie for fourth place in the Big Sky with a 3-4 record.
“This was not an easy decision or one that was made in haste,” Wanless said. “I am not the type of person who believes in change for the sake of change.
“However, I have spent a significant amount of time with this program, the coaches, student-athletes and boosters since arriving in Sacramento and I believe this change is necessary.”
“I support Terry Wanless’ decision to move Hornet football in a new direction,” California State University, Sacramento President Donald R. Gerth said. “I should like to thank John Volek for his dedication and service to California State University, Sacramento and Hornet football.”
The search for a new head football coach will begin immediately.
