Sophomore Fred Amey earned first team honors as a receiver and was honorable mention as a kick returner.
OGDEN, Utah -- Nineteen Sacramento State football players earned all-Big Sky Conference honors, the league announced today. The list included one first team choice, three second team picks and 15 honorable mention selections.

Eastern Washington quarterback Josh Blankenship and Montana quarterback John Edwards were named Co- Offensive Players of the Year. A transfer from Tulsa, Blankenship led the Big Sky with 3,243 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Edwards passed for 3,061 yards and 19 touchdowns while leading Montana to a share of the Big Sky title. Montana safety Trey Young garnered the Defensive Player of the Year award. Young tallied 81 tackles while also recording four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Montana State quarterback Travis Lulay and Blankenship were each named Co-Newcomer of the Year. Lulay led the Bobcats to a 5-2 record in the Big Sky and a bid to the 1-AA playoffs. Lulay, a true freshman, was the league''s second-rated passer with an efficiency rating of 135.4.

The Hornets'' honorees were led by Fred Amey. The sophomore wide receiver was the lone player to be named to the first team. Amey led the team with 62 catches for 989 yards and nine touchdowns. Amey''s receptions broke the school record of 60 set by Mike Carter in 1969 while his touchdowns ranked second in the single-season record book. The Union City, Calif., native ranks first in career receiving yards (1,874) and is tied for second in receiving touchdowns (16) and receptions (116). Amey, who also earned honorable mention honors as a kick returner, led the Big Sky and was fifth in I-AA in all-purpose yards per contest (164.7) and second in kickoff return average (25.7).

Senior Brandon Coleman, junior safety Camron Mbewa and sophomore fullback Kendall Riley were each named to the second team. Coleman earned second team honors for the second-consecutive season after finishing 42 tackles and one interception. The Rancho Cordova, Calif., native ended his Hornet career with 134 tackles and nine picks. Mbewa also earned all-Big Sky honors in consecutive seasons as one of the conferences top hitting safeties. A native of Sacramento, he fished the season with 49 tackles and two fumble recoveries. Riley earned his first all-conference honor after making the transition from tailback to fullback. The Sacramento native finished with 332 yards, four touchdowns and an average of 4.1 yards per carry.

Eight of the team’s 15 honorable mention selections were on the offensive side of the ball. The group was led by sophomore quarterback Ryan Leadingham. Offensive linemen Marko Cavka, Sean Doherty, Dustin Nicolodi and B.J. Tittlemier, tight end Caleb Jones, running back Garrett White and placekicker Bret LeVier also received recognition. Defensively, tackles Bilal Watkins and Eric Broden, defensive end Brad Osterhout, linebackers Ryan Kroeker and Kelly Micco and cornerback Jeremy Johnson also received honorable mention accolades.

Leadingham and Watkins are the only players who have been named all-Big Sky before. Leadingham was also honorable mention last season while Watkins was second team in 2000.
