SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Andrew Bonner scored his first touchdown of the season with 2:32 left in the game to lift the Sacramento State football team to a 42-35 win over Humboldt State Saturday afternoon at Hornet Stadium. The game ended the Hornets’ record at 5-7 while the Lumberjacks dropped to 1-10.
Sacramento State led 28-7 early in the second quarter but had its lead slip away. Behind the play of quarterback Chris Dixon, HSU rallied to tie the game, 35-35, with 3:50 left in the fourth quarter. Dixon ended the game 39-for-57 with 455 passing yards and four touchdowns. He was, however, intercepted twice, including the final play of the game.
Garrett White helped Sacramento State to its strong start with a pair of first-quarter scores. The senior found the end zone from four yards out midway through the first period. After Humboldt State tied the game in a 28-yard pass from Dixon to Antoine Smith, White scored on a 1-yard run.
Sophomore Fred Amey and Ryan Leadingham worked their magic just 82 seconds later to put Sacramento State ahead, 21-7. After white scored, Robert Coleman intercepted Dixon and the Hornets used just four plays before Amey caught a 10-yard pass on the final play of the first quarter. The pair hooked up again in the second quarter for a 58-yard score. On the play, Leadingham found Amey in the middle of the field and the Union City, Calif., native exploded past the secondary for his ninth touchdown of the season.
Amey ended the game with seven receptions and 134 receiving yards. His season total of 62 receptions broke the school record of 60 set by Mike Carter in 1969 while his 989 yards were the most by a receiver since the team moved to Div. I-AA in 1993.
Humboldt State began its comeback late in the first half when Corey Smith scored from a yard out and Antoine Smith caught a 33-yard pass to make the score 28-21, in favor of Sacramento State, at halftime.
The Lumberjacks appeared to have a chance to tie the game at the start of the second half. On the team’s first drive, HSU drove the ball to the 7-yard line but Jeremy Callaway forced Antoine Smith to fumble. The ball was recovered by Brandon Coleman who returned it to the Humboldt State 35-yard line. White capped the drive with a 4-yard rush to put the Hornets on top by 14.
The Lumberjacks responded with a four-play, 64-yard drive which resulted in a 49-yard touchdown pass from Dixon to Brent Adkins. The extra point, however, was blocked. Neither team was able to score for most of the fourth period. HSU finally struck wtih 3:50 left on a 19-yard fade pattern to the corner where he connected with Dustin Creager. Dixon again found Creager for a two-point conversion which tied the game, 35-35.
Sacramento State returned the ensuing kickoff to the Humboldt State 48-yard line. Facing a 3rd-and-2 the Hornets received a break when the Lumberjacks were called for unsportsmanlike conduct which moved the ball to the HSU 20-yard line and gave the team an automatic first down. Leadingham then found Amey on a 23-yard strike which ended on the 2-yard line and set up Bonner’s score.
Leadingham ended the day with a season-high 324 passing yards. The Covina, Calif., native completed 24-of-36 pass attempts and had two touchdowns. The sophomore ended the season without an interception in his final four games (145 attempts).
