SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Nate Cook’s 36-yard field goal with no time remaining in regulation gave Montana State a 31-30 come-from-behind victory over the Sacramento State football team Saturday evening at Hornet Stadium. The Hornets are now 3-6 overall and 2-3 in Big Sky Conference play while the Bobcats improved to 4-5, 2-2.

With less than 20 seconds remaining, Montana State’s Travis Lulay completed a pass to Scott Turnquist to the Sacramento State 40-yard line and was tackled in bounds with the clock running. The Bobcats ran up to the line of scrimmage and snapped the ball with less than one second remaining on the clock. Lulay connected on a desperation pass to tight end Kolby Drube at the Hornet 30-yard line as time expired but a 15-yard defensive facemask penalty gave Cook the opportunity to kick the winning field goal.

Lulay led the Montana State offense by completing 26-of-37 passes for 319 yards and two touchdown passes. Running back Ryan Johnson led the Bobcats with 113 yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Aaron Hill finished with a game-high 175 yards on six receptions and one touchdown.

Sacramento State sophomore quarterback Ryan Leadingham completed 22-of-30 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns. The Covina, Calif., native moved into first place in the Sacramento State career record book by completing his 366th pass. The previous mark of 365 was set by Mike Sullivan from 1981-83.

Senior running back Garrett White led the Hornet rushing attack with 77 yards on 23 carries after freshman Tyronne Gross left the contest in the second quarter with a left ankle injury. Junior receiver Kenan Smith led the receiving corps with five catches for 52 yards.

The Hornet defense was led by sophomore linebacker Kelly Micco who tallied a game-high 10 tackles (six solo). Senior cornerback Brandon Coleman recorded his first interception of the 2002 season.

Montana State got on the scoreboard first when Johnson plunged into the endzone from one-yard out at the 7:37 mark of the first quarter. The Hornets answered back in the final seconds of the quarter when Gross scored on a six-yard run.

Sacramento State took their first lead with 10:37 remaining in the second quarter when Leadingham threw a 22-yard touchdown strike to sophomore receiver Fred Amey. The Bobcats evened the score when Lulay connected with receiver Junior Adams for a 22-yard strike with 2:57 remaining in the half.

Montana State reclaimed the lead at the 12:01 mark of the third quarter when Johnson recorded his second touchdown of the evening on a 9-yard run. Sacramento State tied the contest for the second time when Leadingham found White for a 23-yard touchdown at the 6:35 mark. The Bobcats answered quickly when Lulay connected with Hill for a 53-yard pass with 3:21 remaining in the quarter.

In the beginning of the fourth period, sophomore kicker Bret LeVier cut the Hornet deficit to four with a 29-yard field goal. The Hornets reclaimed the lead again with 4:42 remaining in the quarter when White ran for a 4-yard touchdown run.

Sacramento State will next travel to Montana to face the Grizzlies on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11:05 a.m. PST in Grizzly Stadium. The game can be heard on KTKZ 1380 AM and be seen on UPN-31 KMAX.
