DARREN ARBET TO BE HONORED AT SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL GAME

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State athletics department will honor San Jose SaberCats head coach Darren Arbet at halftime of this Saturday’s (Nov. 2) football game against Montana State.

Arbet, who played for the Hornets from 1981-85, guided the SaberCats to the Arena Football League championship and was named AFL Coach of the Year in 2002. Arbet’s team started the year 12-0 and finished the 2002 regular season with a 13-1 record. The team then proceeded to win all three of its playoff games, including a 52-14 win over the Arizona Rattlers in ArenaBowl XVI.

In his four seasons as head coach, San Jose has posted a 46-17 overall record and has advanced to the playoffs each of the last three seasons. His .732 winning percentage ranks third all-time in the AFL and he also became the winningest coach in franchise history last season.

Arbet joined the SaberCats coaching staff as the defensive coordinator in 1995 — the team’s inaugural season. He became just the second head coach in franchise history on Jan. 13, 1999.

Prior to joining the SaberCats, Arbet spent one season with the Albany Firebirds as an assistant coach.

His coaching career began at Sacramento State in 1990. During his three years with the Hornets, Arbet coached tight ends and special teams, and was also the academic advisor.

As a player, Arbet was a defensive end at Sacramento State He also was a member of the track and field team where he competed in the decathlon, discus and shot put.

Prior to attending Sacramento State, Arbet graduated from Edison High School in Stockton, Calif.
