SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team announced today that it has signed tight end Fred Dammeyer to a scholarship. Dammeyer will enroll at the University for the fall semester and will begin play with the team when it opens practice in early August.Dammeyer will enter the 2002 season as a junior. He has spent the past three seasons at Arizona Western Junior College in Yuma, Ariz. During the 1999 season, the 6-foot-5, 265-pounder played defensive end for the Matadors. That season, he was named all-Region I. A knee injury forced Dammeyer to redshirt during the 2000 season but he returned to the squad this past season as a tight end and again was named to the all-region team.
Prior to his return from injury, Arizona Western was 0-4. Once Dammeyer was in the lineup, the team won four of its final six games.
“We are real excited to get a commitment from Fred,” Sacramento State head coach John Volek said. “He is a strong player who has proven to be a very good blocker. We think that he can come in and make an immediate impact.”
Dammeyer graduated from Yuma High School in 1999. He played three years of varsity football as a tight end and middle linebacker. He also competed in varsity basketball and soccer for two seasons. He was twice named all-region as a linebacker and caught eight touchdown passes over his final two years.
