SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State center Terence Wagner and defensive back Ed Canonico each agreed to free agent contracts on Monday. Wagner was signed by the New York Giants while Canonico will suit up for the Cleveland Browns. Both players will report to their team’s mini-camp at the end of this week.Wagner starred for the Hornets over the past four years. The Del Campo HS graduate started all 44 games of his collegiate career and was a member of the Sacramento State offensive line which paved the way for record-breaking running back Charles Roberts.
The 6-4, 280-pound Wagner was a four-time all-Big Sky Conference selection. After his junior season he was named All-America by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. Following last season, he was invited to the Gridiron Classic in Orlando, Fla.
After redshirting at Texas Tech, Canonico played the past four seasons with the Hornets. The Las Vegas native started 28 games for the team at free safety during his career including all 11 this past season. As a senior, Canonico recorded 55.0 tackles, one interceptions and three pass breakups.
The 6-1, 178 pounder saw his professional stock rise after the season. Canonico wowed scouts with his 40-yard time and his strength and jumping ability during individual workouts.
Wagner will be the fourth Sacramento State player to play for the Giants. He will join Brian Allred, Mike Black and Kevin Fontes. Canonico is just the second Hornet to play for Cleveland joining Mike Clemons.
