SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team is preparing for its busiest weekend of the spring as it holds the annual Green-Gold Game on Friday, Apr. 19, and the Hall of Fame Banquet on Saturday, Apr. 20. The game, which will be held at Hornet Stadium, is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The Hall of Fame Banquet will take place at the Holiday Inn Capital Plaza starting at 6 p.m.The Green-Gold game will feature the Hornets in a controlled scrimmage. The game will be divided into four 10-minute quarters which will pit the offense against the defense. A unique scoring system will be used which will allow each team to score points.
Saturday’s Hall of Fame Banquet will see the induction of Randy Bingham, Jamie Berry, Lou Sorrentino, Bill Kutzer, Troy Mills, Cal Boyes and Fred “Hoot” Gibson.
Bingham was a center for the Hornets from 1978-81. He was a two-time all-conference selection and set the school record for most consecutive starts at center.
Berry was a defensive back at Sacramento State from 1986-87. He was a unanimous all-conference selection as a senior and was also the team’s most valuable defensive back/linebacker.
Sorrentino played between 1983-85 as a defensive lineman. He was the 1985 most valuable defensive lineman on the team and led the 1984 squad with nine sacks.
Bill Kutzer spent three decades as a coach with the Hornets and continues to work as a professor at Sacramento State. Kutzer served as an assistant from 1965-82 and worked under Ray Clemons, Glenn Brady and Bob Mattos. He was the freshman football coach from 1965-68 before moving up to the varsity team. In 1968, Kutzer helped coach the Hornet team which advanced to the Junior Rose Bowl against Grambling.
Troy Mills delighted fans and frustrated opponents from 1991-92. Mills tallied 2,771 career rushing yards and 25 rushing touchdowns in his two years. Following his senior season he was named All-America and played in the East-West Shrine Game. Mills went on to play for the Sacramento Surge of the World League of American Football before spending the past nine seasons in the Canadian Football League. Mills is currently playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers along with fellow Hornets Charles Roberts, Ryland Wickman and Tony Corbin.
Cal Boyes is being inducted as both a coach and an administrator. Boyes was the Hornets’ backfield coach from 1956-69 and also worked as a professor and athletic director at Sacramento State from 1956-95.
Fred “Hoot” Gibson starred for the program from 1965-68 as a center. He was a two-time first team all-league selection and was also named second team all-West Coast. Following graduation, Gibson began teaching and coaching at El Camino HS. He also carried the Olympic Torch during the relay across the country this past winter.
