SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Former Sacramento State offensive lineman Lonie Paxton and the AFC-champion New England Patriots will be in New Orleans this Sunday, February 3, for Super Bowl XXXVI. The Patriots will play the NFC-champion St. Louis Rams in the Superdome.Paxton, who is in his second season for the Patriots, played for the Hornets from 1996-99. New England defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, 24-17 in Pittsburgh.
Paxton was instrumental in the Patriots’ 16-13 overtime win over the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Divisional Playoffs two weeks ago in Foxboro, Mass. Paxton was the long snapper for the two field goals that tied the game in the final minute of regulation and the game-winner in overtime.
He is only the second Hornet to reach the Super Bowl. Former Sacramento State offensive lineman John Gesek was part of the three winning Super Bowl teams for the Dallas Cowboys during the 1990’s.
A native of Corona, Calif., Paxton played in 41 career games for the Hornets. He was a part of an offensive line that set numerous school and national records while blocking for Charles Roberts. During his tenure on the line, he helped Roberts rish for a Div. I-AA record 2,260 yards in 1998 and 409 yards in a game in 1999.
