Sophomore Camron Mbewa was named to all-Big Sky first team. |
OGDEN, Utah — Eleven Sacramento State football players earned all-Big Sky Conference honors, the league announced today. The list included one first team choice, three second team picks and seven honorable mention selections.Eastern Washington running back Jesse Chatman was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Chatman led I-AA in rushing with 2,096 yards and is a finalist for the Walter Payton Award. Montana’s Vince Huntsberger garnered the Defensive Player of the Year award. Huntsberger tallied 110 tackles and forced five fumbles. He also won the award in 1999. Portland State running back Ryan Fuqua took home the Newcomer of the Year Award. The freshman collected 1,586 yards, including 909 over the final three games of the year.
The Hornets’ honorees were led by Camron Mbewa. The sophomore safety was the lone player to be named to the first team. Mbewa led the team with 88 tackles including 56 solo stops. He had seven tackles for loss, recorded two interceptions and recovered a fumble. The Mira Loma HS graduate had at least six tackles in nine of the 10 games he appeared in. He also had eight or more tackles in six games, including a season-high 17 against EWU. Against the Eagles, Mbewa also blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.
Senior Terence Wagner and juniors Park McAllister and Brandon Coleman were each named to the second team. Wagner earned his fourth all-league honor in as many seasons. A Sacramento native, Wagner started all 44 games in his career and will participate in the Rotary Gridiron Classic in January. McAllister played both inside and outside linebacker for the Hornets. He was third on the team with 69 tackles. He also led the team in sacks (3.0), forced one fumble and recovered a fumble. Coleman, a graduate of Cordova HS, led the team with four interceptions while starting all 11 games at cornerback.
Five of the seven honorable mention selections came from the offensive side of the ball. The group was led by freshman quarterback Ryan Leadingham. Wide receivers Fred Amey and Michael Johnson, Jr., tight end Seth Deyo and offensive lineman Chris Frank also received recognition. Defensively, linebacker Lee Turner and punter Jimmy Sanchez also received honorable mention accolades.
Leadingham started all 11 games for the team and set the school single-season record with 2,752 passing yards. He ended the year with three-straight 300-yard games. The Covina, Calif., native also set the school mark for completions and attempts in a season.
Fellow freshman Fred Amey was Leadingham’s top target. Amey led the team with 54 receptions and seven touchdowns. His reception total was the second best in Sacramento State single-season history. Amey also led the team in kick returns and totaled 1,352 all-purpose yards during the season. Johnson joined Amey to become the first duo in school history to each catch 50 passes. The junior caught 50 passes including five touchdowns.
Deyo appeared in 10 games for the team and finished fourth on the squad with 17 receptions. His top game came against Portland State in the final outing of the season where he had four catches for 34 yards. Frank was named honorable mention for the second-straight season. The sophomore has not missed a start in his two seasons with the team.
Despite playing in just eight games, Turner was named all-conference. The McClatchy HS graduate totaled 57 tackles on the year including 39 unassisted. He was plagued by shoulder and ankle injuries all year. Sanchez finished second in the Big Sky and eighth in I-AA in punting. The Johnson HS grad, averaged 42.7 yards per kick and also recorded a career-high 67-yard punt during the year.
Eight of Sacramento State’s 11 all-conference selections will return for the 2002 season. Only Wagner, Turner and Sanchez are lost due to graduation. Five of the 11 selections are Sacramento-area products: Wagner (Del Campo), Sanchez (Johnson), Turner (McClatchy), Coleman (Cordova) and Mbewa (Mira Loma).
