PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland State compiled 724 yards of total offense en route to a 52-33 victory over Sacramento State Saturday afternoon at PGE Park.The loss dropped the Hornets to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in the Big Sky Conference. It also marked the team’s eight-straight defeat. The Vikings improved to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in league games.
PSU was led by freshman Ryan Fuqua who had 243 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries. Junior quarterback Juston Wood added 373 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Sacramento State enjoyed another strong performance by freshman Ryan Leadingham. The quarterback collected his third-straight 300-yard game with 312 yards and three touchdowns. Fellow freshman Fred Amey led the squad with 98 receiving yards including his seventh touchdown of the season.
Leadingham’s 312 yards raised his season mark to 2,752 yards. That total set a school record passing the previous mark of 2,532 set by Tony Corbin in 1995. Leadingham also owns the school record for single-season completions and attempts.
Portland State scored on its first drive when Mike Cajal-Willis booted a 29-yard field goal. The Vikings made the score 10-0 on a 1-yard score by Anthony Tuipulotu. Terry Charles increased the PSU lead with an 8-yard TD catch to start the second quarter.
Sacramento State got on the board with 6:05 left in the first half on a 15-yard pass from Leadingham to Michael Johnson, Jr. Fuqua, however, answered with his first score of the day. The Hornets marched right back down the field on a eight-play, 70-yard drive that was capped with a 20-yard TD grab by Amey. The team, however, allowed Portland State to respond with a 2-yard pass to Tim Hester on the final play of the half.
The second half proved to be closer but the Hornets could not overcome the halftime deficit. Beau Huiskens scored on a 4-yard pass to start the scoring in the third period. Fuqua then scored from 37 yards and Hashim Hall added a 3-yard run to give PSU a 45-21 lead at the end of three quarters.
In the fourth period, freshman Kendall Riley darted in from 18-yards out before Fuqua scored from five yards. Senior Kam Davis ended the day’s scoring with an 8-yard run with 2:57 left on the clock.
Davis, who has been plagued by knee injuries throughout his career, led the team with 65 rushing yards on seven carries. His fourth-quarter touchdown was the first of his career.
As a team, Sacramento State tallied 519 yards of total offense. The team, however, tied a school record with 16 penalties which resulted in 143 yards.
Portland State was also caught by the officials. The Vikings had 11 infractions for 101 yards.
