SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Former Sacramento State football players Daimon
Shelton and Tony Corbin have both signed contracts to play next
season.
Shelton, who has played the past four seasons for the Jacksonville
Jaguars, agreed to terms with the Chicago Bears on Monday. The 6-0,
260-pound fullback rushed for 104 yards on 39 carries and had 26
receptions for 214 yards during his stint in Jacksonville. Last
season, he had only two carries for three yards and caught four
passes for 48 yards. While with the Jaguars, Shelton started 26 of 59
games and was noted for opening the holes for Fred Taylor. He helped
Taylor set team records with 264 carries for 1,223 yards and 14
touchdowns in 1999. Last season, Taylor rushed for 1,399 yards.
"He gives us some depth and experience at the position that we need
badly at this point," Chicago Bears Head Coach Dick Jauron said. "We
really thought we were lucky that he was still available at this
time. We had a real good visit with him. I think he's excited about
coming here are we're excited about having him."
Corbin signed a two-year contract with the B.C. Lions of the Canadian
Football League last week. After leaving Sacramento State, Corbin
played one season for the New York CityHawks of the Arena Football
League before moving to Europe to compete in the German Football
League. While in Germany, he also quarterbacked the scout team for
the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. Once in British Columbia, he will fight
for the starting role with CFL legend Damon Allen (the brother of
Marcus Allen).
"This is a good situation for me." Corbin said. "The big field suits
my game well. People know that I can throw and I think I can surprise
some people by the way I run."
Corbin is tied for the school record for career passing touchdowns
(24) and ranks second in school history with 4,866 career passing
yards.
Both Shelton and Corbin were selected in the 1997 NFL draft - marking
the last time that two Sacramento State players were selected in the
same draft. Shelton was taken in the sixth round by Jacksonville
while Corbin was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the seventh
round.
