AYSSE, KENDALL BECOME FIRST SIGNEES OF 2013 FOOTBALL CLASS
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team added the first members of its 2013 recruiting class with the signing of offensive lineman Justin Aysse and safety Robby Kendall. Both players are junior college transfers and will enroll at the University in January.
Aysse played at Long Beach CIty College in 2010 and 2011 before redshirting last season. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound tackle was a second team all-Central Division selection as a sophomore while helping the Vikings to a conference title and serving as a team captain.
The Downey, Calif., native will turn 26 years old in January. His path to college began after spending four years as a field radio operator in the United States Marine Corps. During his time with the USMC, he was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan with the 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines Artillery unit.
"Justin is an athletic tackle that will add depth at the position," Sacramento State head coach Marshall Sperbeck said. "With his military background, he brings an added element of leadership to the team."
Kendall attended Butte College in Chico, Calif., the past two seasons. He was named all-NorCal Conference at free safety and helped the Roadrunners to a 10-1 overall record and a win in the State Center Bowl. As a sophomore, he had 86 tackles, including 10.5 for loss and three interceptions. He also recovered four fumbles, forced two fumbles and was credited with nine pass breakups.
A native of Reno, Nev., Kendall graduated from North Valleys High School in 2010. As a senior, he was an all-High Desert League selection at cornerback and was named the defensive player of the year. That season, he had 80 tackles and six interceptions.
"Robby has played 22 games at the collegiate level and will gain experience with us during the spring," Sperbeck said. "He will have the opportunity to contend for the starting job and replace Ryan McMahon in our defense."
Sacramento State lost only 13 players from its 2012 team which finished the year with a 6-5 overall record. The team is projected to return 17 of its 22 starters.
