FOOTBALL ENDS SPRING WITH STRONG SHOWING IN GREEN-GOLD GAME

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Junior Derard Barton rushed for 64 yards on 13 carries and freshman quarterback Ryan Leadingham threw for 139 yards nd a touchdown during the annual Green-Gold game Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.

The game was the final workout for the Sacramento State football team this spring.

Barton led all rushers in both attempts and yardage during the game. Sophomore Brett Collins added 27 yards on nine carries and junior Kam Davis tallied 36 yards on 12 attempts including a three-yard touchdown. Sophomores Andrew Bonner and Ferni Garza each added a TD from two yards out.

Leadingham, who redshirted last season, completed his first three passes and ended the day 9-for-18. The Covina, Calif., native highlighted the night by connecting with Michael Johnson, Jr., for a 69-yard TD strike. Junior Kevin Laird, who was battling the flu, was 3-for-5 for 15 yards and Garza ended the day 6-for-12 for 44 yards.

The receiving corps was led by Johnson who caught two passes for 77 yards. Juniors Gary Austin, Jr., and Garrett White totaled 18 and 45 yards, respectively. In all, 10 Hornets caught passes during the game.

The Sacramento State defense collected three turnovers during the game. Micah Kraintz and Allen McCoy each recovered a fumble and freshman Cameron Clayton intercepted Leadingham early in the game.

Freshman kicker Paul Kerr showed well late in the game. Kerr connected on field goals from 39 and 42 yards and was 3-for-4 on extra points.

The Hornets return to practice in August and open the 2001 season on Sept. 1 against Saint Mary's.
