SCHUR WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE IN THE DECATHLON AFTER DAY 1 OF BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sam Schur is in second place at the midway point of the decathlon following the first day of the Big Sky Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Sacramento State junior Sam Schur is in second place in the decathlon and freshman Mariah Rogers is seventh in the heptathlon following the first day of the Big Sky Conference Championships, Wednesday at Hornet Stadium.

Schur scored 3,788 points through his first five events and is 105 points behind Montana State's Jeff Mohl. The Santa Maria, Calif., native opened by running a personal best 11.24 in the 100. He then long jumped 23-03.50 which was the best in the competition. Schur took the lead following the shot put where he, once again, led the way with a put of 41-03.25.

He maintained his lead after the high jumping 6-04.75 but slipped behind Mohl after a 400 time of 51.61.

Rogers tallied 2,856 points and is less than 200 points out of fourth place. Rogers ran 14.74 in the 100-hurdles before clearing 4-10.50 in the high jump. She had a shot put of 29-06.50 before running 24.79 in the 200 to make up some ground.

Montana's Lindsey Hall holds a narrow lead with 3,256 points. Portland State's Joenisha Vinson is second at 3,180 and Kelly Coomes of Northern Colorado is third at 3,146.

The heptathlon and decathlon both conclude on Thursday. The decathlon begins at 11 a.m. with the 110-hurdles while the heptathlon opens with the long jump at 1 p.m.
