Steve Roberson Title: Secondary Experience: 7th Year Alma Mater: Sacramento State, '06 Email: roberson@csus.edu Bio: Former Sacramento State player Steve Roberson returns for his eighth season as a member of the coaching staff and his sixth as a full-time coach. This year, Roberson will continue to coach the defensive backs. After two years as the team’s defensive graduate assistant, Roberson was named to the coaching staff prior to the 2006 season. That year, he coached the outside linebackers. One of the players under his tutelage was Tyson Butler. That season, Butler earned second team all-Big Sky honors after tallying 78 tackles. In 2004, Roberson served as the assistant defensive backs coach under then coordinator Tim Skipper. That unit saw all four of its starters earn postseason honors led by Ramon Payne who was named first team all-Big Sky. Safety Brett Shelton garnered second team all-league honors and was also named first team Freshman All-America. Cornerback Brandon Smith and safety Brent Webber were each named honorable mention all-Big Sky. Webber also earned honorable mention Freshman All-America honors. In 2005, Roberson mentored three players to postseason honors. The trio was highlighted by Shelton who garnered second team all-West Region honors as well as second team all-Big Sky. Smith and Webber were named honorable mention. Smith went to join the Detroit Lions and is currently a member of the Calgrary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. The 2007 team had three of the four starters named all-Big Sky with Webber and Shelton joined by cornerback Jody Johnson on the honorable mention list. The following season, Roberson coached a defensive backfield which featured just one returning starter but still had freshman Deionte Gordon named honorable mention all-Big Sky. In 2009 year, Roberson helped coach Zach Schrader to the Big Sky Newcomer of the Year award and second team all-Big Sky honors. Last season, the defensive backs accounted for four of the team’s five highest tackle totals. Among those was Schrader who recorded 82 stops and was named second team all-Big Sky for the second consecutive season, As a player, Roberson competed for the Hornets during the 2003 season. That year, he played linebacker and on special teams. Prior to attending Sacramento State, Roberson played the 2001 season at West Los Angeles Junior College. Before that, he spent two years at San Diego State. A native of Los Angeles, he graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1999. Roberson earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering in December of 2005. Roberson and his wife, Laura, were married in June of 2010.
