The Sacramento State football signed 10 players to National Letters of Intent, it was announced today by first-year head coach Marshall Sperbeck. The list is comprised of five offensive and five defensive players. Also notable is the fact that five of the players played in the Sac-Joaquin Section and six have Northern California ties.

“Overall, I thought we did a good job,” Sperbeck said. “We got off to a late start and spent the first few days looking at film and trying to find players that fit our program. We also put an emphasis on recruiting in Northern California and that is something we will continue to do.”

On the offensive side of the ball, Sacramento State inked a pair of linemen. Kevin Youtsey stands at 6-foot-4, 300 pounds, and comes to the Hornets from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Calif. Gallieni Sylvestre is a 6-foot-7, 260-pounder who will also add to the front line. The team also signed a pair of receivers in Andy White (Mission Viejo HS) and Larry Parker (St. Augustine HS/San Diego, Calif.). Local running back Bryan Hilliard of Laguna Creek HS will also add an option in the backfield.

Defensively, Mike Hickman and Matt Evans are a pair of junior college linebackers that enrolled at the University at the start of the semester and will compete with the team during the spring. The pair were both junior college All-Americans last season at Foothill JC and Sacramento City JC, respectively. Vacaville’s Zack Hall is listed as both a lineman and linebacker and comes to the team after leading the Bulldogs to the Sac-Joaquin Div. I Section title in 2006. In the secondary, Grant’s Ricky Thompson was one of six Pacers to sign Div. I scholarships and will play on the corner. Greg Johnson, a safety from St. John Bosco HS, completes the class.

“We knew we needed immediate help at linebacker to help replace the two graduated starters,” Sperbeck said. “We think we have a good fit with Mike and Matt.”
