Ryan Smaha was hired as the team's Director of Football Operations in May of 2014. Smaha came to the Hornets after serving as an assistant coach for Jody Sears at Weber State for two seasons.

During his time at WSU, Smaha was the Widlcats' special teams coordinator. During his first season, he coached punter Tony Epperson who led the nation in punting average before a season-ending injury. The team finished in the top half of the Big Sky in punting and kickoff return average that season.

Smaha came to Weber State from Idaho State where he was an assistant coach for the Bengals in 2011 coaching the outside linebackers. Prior to ISU, he spent the 2010 season as the tight ends coach at Western Oregon where he assisted the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in run game planning. During the summer of 2010 Smaha helped coach the SWARCO Raiders in Innsbruck, Austria.

Smaha worked as a graduate assistant coach at Washington State from January 2007 to April 2010, where he first coached with Jody Sears. While working with Cougars, Smaha coached the outside linebackers in 2008-09 and the assisted the defensive backs coach in 2007. During this time he also served as a defensive and special team's coach.

During his tenure, he coached three Pac-10 honorable mention players who all signed free agent contracts with NFL teams.

Prior to Washington State, Smaha had his first stint at Idaho State where he was the assistant recruiting coordinator from 2004-06.

A native of Pullman, Wash., Smaha played for Eastern Oregon during in 2002 and 2003 seasons. During the 2003 season, Smaha earned Football's Big-Team-Little Me award.

He earned his bachelor of science degree in business administration and marketing from Eastern Oregon in 2004 and graduated with his master's degree in higher education administration in 2011.
