Former Sacramento State player Fred Kelley is in his third tenure as a member of the coaching staff. Kelley serves as the team's tight ends coach and special teams coordinator.
In 2013, Kelley saw solid production from each of his position groups. Four tight ends combined to catch 43 passes for 396 yards and seven touchdowns. The group was led by freshman Cole Hikutini who ranked second on the team five TD catches. On special teams, Justin Weldon recorded the finest season by a punter in school history. Weldon was named second team all-Big Sky after averaging 44.9 yards per punt which placed him fourth nationally and second in the conference. Weldon also set Sacramento State records with a career average of 44.2 yards per punt and with a long of 78 yards which came against UC Davis.
Kelley previously coaches at Sacramento State in 2007-08. During that time, he worked with the offensive line and helped mentor Matt Lemley, Kyle Leitzke and Ray Navar to all-Big Sky Conference honors. He returned for the 2011 season where he was the offensive assistant.
Kelley spent the 2012 season at Humboldt State and served as the Lumberjacks' offensive line coach.
The Northern California native also played for the Hornets during the 2005 season and ended the year with 17 total tackles, including one for loss. Prior to coming to Sacramento State, he spent one year at Idaho and two at Los Medaños JC. At LMC, he played fullback and linebacker. As a sophomore in 2001, he was named the school's Male Athlete of the Year and also earned all-conference honors at linebacker.
After his playing career, Kelley spent two years as the head junior varsity football coach at Florin High School in Sacramento. He has also worked as a strength and conditioning coach at San Jose State. Kelley was the assistant offensive line coach at UC Davis in 2010 and also served as the head coach of Rodriguez High School in Fairfield for two years. While leading Rodriguez, he helped the Mustangs to a Solano County Athletic League title in 2009.
Kelley graduated from Liberty HS in Brentwood, Calif., in 2000. While there, he was an all-conference selection at running back.
He graduated from Sacramento State in December 2006 with a
bachelor's degree in kinesiology. He added his masters in
kinesiology in 2009.
