  • DEFENSE STARTS STRONG, OFFENSE IGNITES IN SECOND SCRIMMAGE

    The defense flexed its muscle in the early going before the offense found its rhythm during the second scrimmage of preseason camp for the Sacramento State football team on Saturday. The team will conduct one more week of camp before preparing for the season opener against Southern Oregon on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.
  • SECOND SCRIMMAGE SET FOR SATURDAY PLUS TRAINING CAMP NOTEBOOK

    The Sacramento State football team will conduct its second scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday, Aug., 17, on the team’s practice field. The practice will begin at 10:45 and the scrimmage will start in the first team period, approximately 20 minutes later. Like last week’s action, the practice will have officials and will follow the same format of placing the offense in different settings on the field.
  • POSITION PREVIEW: DEFENSIVE BACKS

    The leading returning tackler on the team is senior Caelan Barnes who tallied 71 stops last season while starting all 10 games. Barnes was the starter at free safety in the first nine contests before shifting to cornerback for the finale. The senior was consistent throughout the season with at least three tackles in every game and five or more in nine contests.
  • POSITION PREVIEW: WIDE RECEIVERS

    The biggest hole to fill for the offense will be at wide receiver where the team lost three starters from a year ago who combined for over 1,000 yards and four touchdowns. Andre Lindsey and Jaelin Ratliff both graduated and will leave the team searching for another deep-ball threat. The pair ranked 1-2 in the FCS in 2017 in yards per reception and each have been atop the Big Sky standings the last two seasons. Along with their graduation, the team was dealt an additional blow when Johnnie Rucker suffered a knee injury during spring practice and will be forced to redshirt in 2019. Rucker was the leading returning receiver on the team with 734 career yards and seven touchdowns.

    The Hornet linebacking corps will have a brand new look as the trio of Immanuel Anderson, Malcolm Thomas and Manoah Pearson — who each ranked among the top five on the team in tackles — all graduated. The three combined for 174 total tackles last season, including a team-high 73 from Anderson.

    Elijah Dotson accounted for 136 yards of offense, Kevin Thomson and Jake Dunninway each threw touchdown passes and the Sacramento State defense created six turnovers during a 98-play scrimmage on Saturday at the team’s practice field.

    A trio of linemen enter 2019 with at least 10 career starts and all are expected to maintain their starting jobs with the team. Each of the three have played a large role for an offense which has averaged 5.0 yards per rush over the last two seasons.

    Two years ago, Sacramento State led the FCS with 43 sacks for an average of 3.91 per game. That total set the school’s Div. I single-season record and ranked second all-time by a Hornet team. In all, 14 players were credited with a sack as the team brought pressure from all angles. Last season, Sacramento State was limited to 13 total sacks and only six players earned at least 1.0 sacks. New defensive coordinator Andy Thompson will be tasked with rejuvenating the Hornet pass rush and will be aided with the return of an all-Big Sky first teamer.
  • FOOTBALL OPENS PRESEASON CAMP ON FRIDAY, AUG. 2

    The Sacramento State football team will begin its 2019 season on Friday, Aug. 2, as the team will hold its first official practice from 6-8 p.m. Per NCAA rules, the team will practice without pads for the first four days and will conduct its first practice in full gear on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

    After being named first team all-Big Sky following his breakout season in 2018,Sacramento State junior running back Elijah Dotson was named as part of the 2019 Big Sky preseason all-conference team, it was announced today.
  • PRESEASON FOOTBALL POLLS REVEALED AT BIG SKY KICKOFF

    The Big Sky conference preseason football coaches and media polls were released on Monday as part of the Big Sky Kickoff event. Sacramento State was picked to finish 11th out of 13 teams by the coaches and was selected 12th by the media.

    With less that 100 days remaining before the start of the 2019 college football season, honors are beginning to roll in for Sacramento State running back Elijah Dotson. The junior was named a second team preseason All-American by HERO Sports, it was announced today.
