MEDEIROS NAMED TO FRED MITCHELL AWARD WATCH LIST

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State senior kicker Devon Medeiros has been selected as one of 34 place-kickers across the nation to be named to the 2018 Fred Mitchell Award watch list. The award honors the best collegiate kicker that does not compete at the NCAA FBS level.

Medeiros earned second team all-Big Sky honors in 2017. The Hilmar, Calif., native tied the school record by making 14 field goals and led the team in scoring with 94 points. Medeiros placed himself among the elite in school history during the year as his .824 field goal percentage (14-17) was tied for the third best all-time at Sacramento State. He also made 52-of-53 extra points to rank third with a .981 percentage and was sixth in single-season scoring.

Medeiros showcased his power during the season, making a 52-yard field goal at Idaho in the first game of the year. That kick is tied for the second-longest in school history and was just one yard shy of the record. He also averaged 64.2 yards per kickoff and had 43 touchbacks.

The Fred Mitchell Award is given to the nation's top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA schools. The award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and former Chicago Tribune sports columnist.

The top performers will be recognized monthly during the season and the winner will be announced in December.

Sacramento State starts its season at home on Saturday, Sept. 1, against St. Francis (Ill.) at 6 p.m.
