FOOTBALL SUFFERS 34-7 LOSS TO UC DAVIS IN CAUSEWAY CLASSIC
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gabe Manzanares rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns and added 95 receiving yards on just four catches to propel UC Davis to a 34-7 win over Sacramento State in the 60th annual Causeway Classic on Saturday in front of 12,571 at Hornet Stadium.
The win improved the Aggies to 5-7 overall and 5-3 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets also finished the season at 5-7 overall but were 4-4 in league games.
Manzanares hurt Sacramento State early, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter to build an unsurmountable lead for UCD. After the Hornets were stopped on 4th-and-3 at the UC Davis 27 on the game's opening drive, the Aggies drove 73 yards for a touchdown. Manzanares picked up 52 yards during the drive, including a 36-yard screen pass which set up his 2-yard touchdown run.
The Hornets marched back down the field but stalled inside the 5-yard line before missing a 24-yard field goal. UC Davis responded with a 6-play, 80-yard drive which was capped by an 80-yard run from Manzanraes.
The Aggie lead jumped to 21-0 early in the second quarter when Manusania Luuga scored on a 14-yard run. Sacramento State's only points came during the following drive which traveled 74 yards on 13 plays in which freshman Jordan Robinson scored on a 4-yard rush up the middle.
Brady Stuart made a 38-yard field goal with 2:00 left in the half to give UCD a 24-7 lead advantage. Stuart started the second half with a 30-yard field goal. That score held until the early in the fourth quarter when Randy Wright found Tom Hemmingsen for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the right corner.
As a team, UC Davis outgained Sacramento Sate, 400-315. The biggest disparity came in rushing yards where the Aggies had 188 compared to 75 from the Hornets.
Garrett Safron completed 22-of-33 passes for 221 yards and also rushed for a team-leading 34 yards for the Hornets. Morris Norrise caught six passes for 101 yards and finished the season with 81 receptions which ranks second in school history.
Wright was 17-of-22 for 212 yards with a touchdown pass. Hemmings caught a game-high seven passes for 52 yards.
Senior Todd Davis finished his career with 12 tackles and Ofa Fifita added eight to lead the Hornet defense. Davis had double-digit tackles in eight games this season and finishes his career with 331 total tackles which ranks third in program history. His 131 tackles during the season are the fifth most ever by a Hornet.
NOTES: Prior to the game Sacramento State honored its 12 seniors who were playing their final collegiate game…Justin Weldon set the Hornet record with a 78-yard punt in the fourth quarter. The previous record of 75 was set by Jerry Angelich against Cal State Fullerton in 1975…Weldon also set the single-season and career punting average records at Sacramento State…DeAndre Carter, who leads the team with 14 touchdown receptions this season, did not play due to an ankle injury suffered at Portland State…Sacramento State will holds its annual season awards reception on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Alumni Center.
