OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State quarterback Garrett Safron was named the Big Sky Conference ROOT Sports Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced today. The honor is the first for Safron this season and the third for his career.
In the team's 37-21 win over Northern Colorado, Safron completed 26-of-39 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 33 yards. His touchdowns came on an 11-yard pass to Shane Harrison, a 12-yard pass to DeAndre Carter and a 13-yard pass to Cole Hikutini. In all, Safron completed passes to eight different receivers, including seven who had at least two receptions.
The 312-yard performance marked Safron's fifth career 300-yard game and his second of the year. Over the last four games, the Santa Monica, Calif., native has thrown for 16 touchdowns and now sits alone in second place in Sacramento State history with 41 career TD passes. Safron is now just nine shy of Ryan Leadingham's school record of 50.
The Big Sky awarded the Defensive Player of the Week to Montana cornerback Anthony Goodwin while Montana State's Shawn Johnson and North Dakota's Greg Hardin shared the special teams honor.
