JOHN SMITH FIELD - BASEBALL
Sacramento State’s John Smith Field opened in 1953, was renovated in 2002, and received lights for the first time during the 2016 season. Built in 1953, the team's home ballpark was originally known as Hornet Field until being renamed in honor of long time coach John Smith in 2010.Over the span of 60-plus years, home plate has never moved. The dimensions of the field are 333 feet down the left and right field lines, 375 feet to the gaps, and 400 feet to center field.
More than two years of work went in to funding and installing the lights while Smith, who now serves as a Special Assistant to the Athletics Director, oversaw the process, along with Director of Athletics Bill Macriss and head coach Reggie Christiansen. The first on-campus night game in program history was played on May 17, 2016 vs. Pacific in front of a near capacity crowd with Smith, Christiansen, and former coach Cal Boyes ceremonial turning on the lights for the first time.
The field also received an upgrade prior to the 2015 season when clubhouse and dugout got a new championship look with murals covering the interior walls following the team's 2014 WAC Championship and NCAA Regional appearance. The renovation in 2002 included permanent stadium seating with 150 VIP chairbacks and 1,050 general admission seats to increase the total capacity to 1,200.
The field has also been renovated with new sunken dugouts, new sod, and padding was added along the backstop and dugout areas prior to the 2010 season while the playing surface was again renovated in 2016. Prior to the 2005 season, a new Barco Media LED scoreboard was installed in left center field.
Christiansen, a tireless fundraiser for the program, has made improvements to the batting cages, completely remodeled the player clubhouse, and renovated the dugout prior to the 2011 season. The Hornet clubhouse was redesigned in 2007 and includes a player lounge, locker room and coaches offices. The infield apron was rebuilt in 2007 and a rubberized surface was added around home plate.
John Smith Field was the site of the NCAA Division II West Regionals in 1986 and 1988.
