Steve Holm completed his fourth season at Sacramento State in 2016. It was his third season as Associate Head Coach after serving as an assistant coach at Sacramento State in 2013. Holm serves as the pitching and catching coach and continues to assist with infielders and hitters.
Three Hornets guided by Holm were selected in the 2016 MLB Draft, with pitchers Tyler Beardsley and Sam Long and catcher Gunner Pollman chosen. Pollman led the WAC in runners caught stealing in 2015 and 2016 and Holm led the Hornet pitching staff to the second best ERA, opposing batting average, and WHIP in the WAC during the 2016 season. Beardsley and junior starter Max Karnos also earned all-WAC honors.
Under Holm’s guidance the 2015 Hornet pitching staff ended the season ranked third in all of NCAA Div. I with a 1.09 WHIP as well as ranking third with just 2.07 walks allowed per nine innings. The squad also ranked 12th nationally with only 7.70 hits allowed per nine innings and recorded single-season school records for earned run average (2.97 - 18th best in Div. I), opposing batting average (.235), and fewest walks allowed (124).
The team broke the ERA record for the second consecutive year in 2015 and the opposing batting average for the third straight after posting a 3.27 ERA and .240 opposing average in 2014. The 2014 pitching staff also threw a program-record 572.0 innings but allowed the second fewest earned runs in the program's Div. I history (208).
Senior starters Brennan Leitao and Ty Nichols both earned all-WAC first team honors in 2015, with Leitao becoming the first player in program history to earn first team honors three times and Nichols going 6-0 and shattering the single-season program record with a 1.23 ERA, the fifth best earned run average in all of NCAA Div. I.
In 2014 freshman left handed pitcher Sam Long became the team's Saturday starter was named the WAC Freshman of the Year and was a second team all-WAC selection along with sophomore closer Sutter McLoughlin while ace Brennan Leitao was an all-WAC first team honoree Leitao and Long combined to go 17-6 as the top Hornet starters while Leitao became the program's all-time leader in wins and innings pitched.
In 2013 Holm helped the Hornets record then program records for opponent batting average (.255) and shutouts (9). The 2013 pitching staff gave up 102 fewer runs than the previous season. Individually, Sutter McLoughlin broke the school record with 17 saves and was subsequently named an NCBWA and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and starting pitcher Tanner Mendonca was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 17th round of the MLB First Year Player Draft.
Holm also had an impact on the offensive side, most notably with freshman All-American Chris Lewis and freshman Nathan Lukes. Another big difference that Holm made in 2013 was behind the plate in his work with Dane Fujinaka, and in 2015 he helped backstop Gunner Pollman lead the WAC with 27 runners caught stealing and rank eighth in Div. I with a .435 caught stealing percentage.
“I believe Steve is one of the bright up and coming assistant coaches in all of college baseball. He is one of the best baseball minds I have had a chance to work with and is very well rounded as he can coach every aspect of the game.”
Holm, a Sacramento native and McClatchy HS graduate, appeared in 59 games over three seasons with the San Francisco Giants (2008-09) and Minnesota Twins (2011) as a catcher. Holm played in 646 minor league games during his 12-year career, with 51 home runs, 103 doubles, 241 runs and 229 RBIs. He played collegiately at Oral Roberts before being drafted in the 17th round by the Giants in 2001. He was a second team All-American as a junior in 2000, when he finished seventh in the NCAA with a .437 batting average, which is still a school record. His .371 career batting average is the third best mark in ORU history.
Holm was a shortstop in high school and college before being moved to catcher in the minors. He and his wife, Lindsey, were married on June 22, 2013.
