BASEBALL KNOCKS OFF NO. 2 UTRGV, 6-2, IN FIRST OF TWO FRIDAY GAMES

MESA, Ariz. – Sacramento State (35-23) came from behind yet again this season, overcoming a two-run deficit to defeat the UT Rio Grande Vaqueros (34-21), 6-2 in Friday's WAC Tournament contest.

With the win, Sacramento State staves off elimination yet again in the 2019 WAC Tournament and will next face Utah Valley in another win-or-go-home contest at 3:05 pm this afternoon.

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, Trevor Doyle put the Hornets on the board with a soft base hit into shallow left field, scoring Ryan Walstad.

In the bottom of the fifth, Walstad came up with a clutch two-out, two-run double into the left-center gap to put the Hornets on top for the first time of the game, 3-2.

Walstad finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

After they took the lead, Sacramento State never looked back, adding another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

In total, the Hornets offense scored six runs on 11 hits, their most in a game in the tournament so far.

Trevor Doyle led the team with three hits, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Dylan McPhillips and Steven Moretto each had a multi-hit game for the Hornets, as well.

On the mound, Sacramento State used four pitchers to hold the Vaqueros to just two runs on two hits.

Hornets closer Tanner Dalton got the start in Friday's game one, his first career start with Sacramento State. The WAC's second-team closer this season, Dalton gave up two runs – one earned – on one hit over three innings. He threw a season-high 71 pitches in the outing.

Brady Rodriguez picked up his closer, throwing three shutout innings. The appearance was the WAC-leading 30th of the year for the sophomore.

Rodriguez found himself in a spot of trouble in the sixth, hitting a batter and giving up a hit to put runners on the corners with nobody out. He came up big time, inducing a soft pop up, a strikeout, and then induced ground out to end the inning and escape the jam.

Travis Martizia, taking over with two on and one out in the seventh, pulled off a similar feat just one inning later, dancing around danger to again preserve the lead. Martizia pitched the eighth and nine innings, as well, finishing the game for the Hornets.

Sacramento State continues its postseason run with a 3:05 pm PT game against Utah Valley. The game can be heard live online at HornetSports.com/Radio and will also stream online on ESPN Plus.
