SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The 2017 WAC Tournament champion Sacramento State baseball team is the No. 4 seed for the Stanford Regional and will face the Cardinal to open regional play at 6 p.m. Thursday in Stanford. The Hornets will be playing in their second NCAA Regional in the last four seasons.
Sacramento State and Stanford will play the second game of the regional after No. 2 seed Cal State Fullerton and No. 3 BYU face off Thursday at 1 p.m. The double-elimination tournament will pit the winners and losers of Thursday's games together on Friday. All regional games will be streamed on WatchESPN and the ESPN app and all Sacramento State games will air on hornetsports.com/radio.
The Stanford Regional is the only one that will begin on Thursday. Each of the 15 other regional sites will begin play on Friday but the Stanford Regional will play Thursday-Friday-Saturday because BYU does not play on Sundays.
Stanford is the No. 8 national seed, being recognized as the eighth best team in the country. The Cardinal are 40-14 this season and have won 21 of their last 23 games. Cal State Fullerton finished third in the Big West going 34-21 overall and 15-9 in league play and BYU won the West Coast Conference tournament and is 37-19 on the season.
Sacramento State (32-27), which enters the NCAA Tournament on an eight-game winning streak, earned the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) automatic bid to the NCAA regionals by winning the WAC Tournament on Saturday night. The Hornets went 4-0 in the conference tournament in Mesa, Ariz., defeating Seattle U, Northern Colorado, and CSU Bakersfield (twice) to claim the title.
Sacramento State will be making its second ever appearance in the Div. I NCAA Regionals after winning the WAC Tournament for the second time in the last four seasons. The 2014 team won the first WAC Tournament title in program history and made the program's first appearance in the Div. I NCAA Regionals. The Hornets played in the San Luis Obispo regional and defeated No. 18 Arizona State for their 40th win of the season. Sacramento State previously qualified for the NCAA Div. II regionals four times, reaching the Div. II College World Series in 1986 and 1988.
The Hornets are 13-19 all-time against Stanford, having last played the Cardinal in 2009. Sacramento State has only played BYU once before, a 16-2 home win in 2008, and is 6-16 all-time against Cal State Fullerton with the last meeting in 2002.
