DENVER - For his seven shutout innings in a 1-0 Hornet win over North Dakota junior left-handed pitcher Sam Long was named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Long allowed just four singles and two walks over seven scoreless innings in the win over the Fighting Hawks. He tied his career high with seven strikeouts and faced just 25 batters in seven innings, only four over the minimum.
He helped his own cause defensively picking off a runner at second base and he allowed just one stolen base. Long recorded his fourth start this season allowing two earned runs or fewer.
It is the second career WAC Pitcher of the Week honor for Long, who also earned the accolade last year after a similar 1-0 home win over New Mexico State. The Sacramento native picked up his second win of the year after he was named the Preseason WAC Pitcher of the Year entering the 2016 season.
