STOCKTON, Calif. – Junior Max Karnos and three relievers held South Dakota State to just three hits and totaled eight strikeouts to lead Sacramento State to a 4-0 shutout in the finale of a rain-altered and shortened three game series on Monday in Stockton.
The teams ended up playing three games over five days with every game at a different location. Originally scheduled to play a single game Friday, a doubleheader Saturday, and a final game Sunday on campus, the squads played Friday morning at John Smith Field, Sunday afternoon at Delta River College in Stockton, and Tuesday on the campus of the University of the Pacific.
Since South Dakota State was scheduled to play Pacific on Tuesday night anyway, the Jackrabbits agreed to get a third game in against the Hornets before that contest tonight. Sacramento State (7-3) won for the seventh time in its last nine games while keeping South Dakota State (0-11) winless on the season.
Karnos allowed just two hits and two walks with four strikeouts over five scoreless innings to pick up his first win as a Hornet. Sophomore Austin Root struck out three in two innings of work before junior Chad Perry and senior Tyler Beardsley closed out the game with scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Senior transfer Trent Goodrich had his best game as a Hornet going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Goodrich hit second behind junior Blake Edmonson, who had a big day as well going 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Sacramento State tallied four extra-base hits among its nine hits in the game.
The Hornets jumped on South Dakota State starter Henry DeCaster with two runs in the first inning. Edmonson had a leadoff single and Goodrich double him home for a quick first run. With one away Hornet sophomore first baseman Vinny Esposito brought in Goodrich with a single.
In the fourth inning, junior Kody Reynolds had a one-out double off DeCaster and came around to score on an ensuing double from junior catcher Gunner Pollman. The Hornets added an insurance run in the ninth as Edmonson triple to left center to lead off the inning and Goodrich drove him in with an infield single.
South Dakota State had several scoring chances, in part due to three Hornet fielding errors, but left eight runners on base in the game. Sacramento State held the Jackrabbits to 1-for-18 with runners on base and 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
DeCaster took the loss allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over four innings. The Hornets outscored the Jackrabbits 25-10 in the series while hitting .343 with a .556 slugging percentage. Sacramento State pitchers held the South Dakota State offense to a .233 team batting average over the three games.
After the team's scheduled game at Raley Field Monday night was rained out, the Hornets are slated to face Nevada back at Raley at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday should mother nature allow it.
