UC Riverside senior righthander Zach Varela threw a complete game, allowing just one unearned run, and the Highlanders used six stolen bases to spearhead a 6-1 win over Sacramento State on Sunday in Riverside.

Before opening a nine-game home stand next week the Sacramento State baseball team (7-6) returns to the road this weekend. The team will face UC Riverside (6-6) at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Sunday and take on West Virginia (5-4) in a neutral site game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

DEL GRANDE DELIVERS WALK OFF WIN FOR BASEBALL OVER #24 FRESNO STATE
A leadoff single by Scotty Burcham and a Bulldog error gave Sacramento State runners on the corners with none out in a 1-1 game in the 10th and senior David Del Grande came through with a bloop single to center to give Sacramento State a 2-1 win over No. 24 Fresno State on Wednesday at Raley Field.

Junior Brennan Leitao pitched the Hornets to a 6-2 win over San Francisco in the first game on Sunday and Sacramento State had a 5-0 lead in game two before six Hornet errors contributed to a nine-run rally by USF to earn a split with a 9-5 win in game two in San Francisco.

Sacramento State rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh inning and a 5-2 deficit with three runs in the top of the ninth, but in the bottom half Texas A&M third baseman Logan Nottebrok launched a 2-run walk off homer, his second 2-run shot of the game, to give the 21st-ranked Aggies a 7-5 win.

The Sacramento State baseball team looks to build off consecutive 30-win seasons as it opens the 2014 season at 2 p.m. Friday hosting Utah at John Smith Field. The Hornets and Utes play a four-game season opening series, playing at 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and at 1 p.m. on Monday.

BASEBALL'S MCLOUGHLIN NAMED TO NCBWA STOPPER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST
Sacramento State sophomore pitcher Sutter McLoughlin is one of fifty players that have been named to the initial watch list for the 10th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association on Tuesday.

BASEBALL PICKED THIRD IN PRESEASON WAC COACHES’ POLL
The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) has selected Sacramento State third in the preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced Monday. Bakersfield was picked first, earning eight first place votes, while New Mexico State was picked just ahead of the Hornets in second place.

HOSKINS RANKED 68th ON BASEBALL AMERICA’S COLLEGE TOP 100
Sacramento State junior first baseman Rhys Hoskins has been named the No. 68 college prospect on Baseball America’s College Top 100 list. Hoskins is one of just two WAC baseball players to appear on the list, along with Bakersfield pitcher Austin Davis, and is the highest ranked WAC player among 100 of the best college ballplayers in the nation.

2014 WAC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT TO BE PLAYED AT "WRIGLEY WEST" IN ARIZONA
The Western Athletic Conference has awarded Mesa, Ariz. the WAC Baseball Tournament for the 2014 season, WAC Commissioner Jeff Hurd announced on Friday. The event will be played at the Chicago Cubs new Spring Training complex in Mesa which is scheduled to be completed in December, 2013. Visit Mesa, the destination marketing organization for the city, worked to secure the event which will feature the WAC’s top six baseball teams in May.

BASEBALL COACH McKINLEY HIRED AS MENLO COLLEGE HEAD COACH
Sacramento State baseball assistant coach Jake McKinley has been hired as the head coach at Menlo College, the school announced. McKinley leaves the Hornets after three years with the program.
