SACRAMENTO, Calif. – On the heels of impressive play this summer in collegiate wood bat leagues, three Hornet baseball players have been named All-Stars in their respective leagues. Garnering the accolades were senior David Del Grande in the Cal Ripken League and juniors Rhys Hoskins in the Cape Cod League and Kyle Moses in the Far West League.
Del Grande is leading the Bethesda Big Train as the team's leadoff hitter, pacing the squad in hits (40), runs (34), and doubles (9). He is also second on the team with eight stolen bases and has 12 RBI with a .282 batting average. Entering the 2014 season third in Hornet program history with 33 career hit-by-pitches, Del Grande is tied for the league lead with 13 hit-by-pitches in 38 games this summer.
Hoskins has shined in the prestigious Cape Cod League, leading the Falmouth Commodores with 30 RBI, 30 runs scored, and 44 hits. The former Freshman All-American is hitting .321 with five home runs and was selected as the starting left fielder for the West Division in the All-Star game, which will be televised live at 1:30 p.m. Pacific time Saturday on Fox College Sports (Comcast Xfinity 413, AT&T U-Verse 647).
Moses has led the Humboldt Crabs to a 35-12 overall records and an 18-6 conference mark and first place in the Far West League. The junior outfielder is leading the team with a .351 batting average, 54 hits, 12 doubles, 42 runs, and 16 stolen bases while only being caught on three stolen base attempts. He also has two home runs and 21 RBI in 39 games played.
The Cape Cod League All-Star game will be played Saturday and the Far West All-Star game is next Tuesday. Del Grande played in the Cal Ripken League All-Star game last Wednesday. The three All-Stars are among a group of nine Hornets playing summer baseball.
