DENVER – Sacramento State third baseman Will Soto and right-hander Sutter McLoughlin have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 22-28.
Soto, a third baseman from Elk Grove, Calif. (Elk Grove HS), led the Hornets to a 4-1 record last week that included non-conference wins over Saint Mary's and San Francisco, and two wins in a three-game series over WAC foe Louisiana Tech. Soto hit .412 (7-for-17). He tallied two runs, one double, one triple, one home run, one walk and a league-best 13 RBI on the week. He slugged .765 and had an on-base percentage of .444 on the week. Soto hit safely in all five games and is currently riding an eight game hitting streak.
McLoughlin, a freshman from Sacramento, Calif. (Rio Americano HS), picked up three saves during the week, allowing only one hit in four innings of work. The true freshman set the Sacramento State single-season record for saves after capping Sunday's 4-1 win over Louisiana Tech. He struck out all three batters he faced in Sunday's game. During the week, McLoughlin struck out eight batters of the 13 batters he faced in only four innings of work. McLoughlin currently is tied for ninth in Div. I in saves and his total is the most among all freshmen. This week marks the second time he's been named WAC Pitcher of the Week.
Sacramento State will play at Nevada on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before traveling to Seattle University for a three-game WAC series, Friday-Sunday.
