CHICO, Calif. — The Sacramento State baseball team combined for 20 runs and 22 hits while only surrendering only four runs as the Hornets swept Oregon Tech (9-1, 11-3) in a doubleheader at Nettleton Stadium to open the 2003 season. The games were played in Chico, Calif., as part of a travel compromise between Oregon Tech (who scheduled two games against Chico State on Saturday and Monday ) and the Hornets. Sacramento State begins the season 2-0 for the first time since 1991 while the Hustlin’ Owls dropped to 0-4.In the first game, senior Steve Cuckovich recorded his first win of the season after allowing only one run on six hits while striking out eight batters in five innings of work. Freshman Joe Guntz threw two shutout innings in relief to seal the victory.
The Hornet offense racked up nine runs on 10 hits including team high’s by senior Tim Reimer (three runs) and juniors Jesse Schmidt (two hits) and Chris Kinsey (three RBI). Junior Bobby Ciani and sophomore Pedro Santiago also added two RBI apiece to help the squad.
In the second game, Kinsey, Schmidt, junior John Acha and sophomore Bret LeVier each hit a home run to lead the Hornets to a come-from-behind victory.
The Hustlin’ Owls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning after RBI’s by Derrick Draper (double), Trevor Mauch (groudout) and A.J. Norris (triple).
The Hornets bounced back with one run in the second, third and fourth and sophomore Warren Rosebrock settled down to allow only one hit in the next four innings to exit with a 3-3 tie in the sixth.
Sacramento State took the lead for good in the seventh when Acha and Kinsey hit back-to back homers off of Kevin Heim with two outs remaining in the inning. The Hornets added six runs of insurance in the eighth to seal the victory.
Junior Renecke Stelzriede allowed no runs, two hits and recorded three strikeouts in two innings of relief to earn the win. Junior Andy Mohr pitched a perfect ninth to end the game. Kinsey and LeVier were the only Hornets to record at least two hits in the contest.
Sacramento State will return home to face Pacific in its home opener on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. at newly renovated Hornet Field.
