San Francisco scored 10 runs on 17 hits including two home runs by Jason Howard as the Dons defeated the Sacramento State baseball team, 8-1, Saturday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. The Hornet dropped to 32-24 on year while the Dons improved to 25-30. San Francisco took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a sacrifice fly by Anthony Jimenez. Joe Jacobitz and Ryan Sittauer led off the inning with consecutive singles before being advanced by a sacrifice bunt by Royce Fukuroku. Jiminez followed with a deep fly to right to score the contest''s first run.
The Don''s increased their lead to 3-0 in the third after a two-run home run by Jason Howard down the right-field line.
San Francisco increased the margin to 8-0 in the fifth inning after RBI singles by Nick Tarbat, Andrew Smith and Sittauer, an RBI fielder''s choice by Fukuoku and a sacrifice fly by Alfanso Valdez.
Sacramento State got on the board in the seventh inning after a solo home run to left field by junior Chris Kinsey. For Kinsey, it was his seventh homer of the season.
The Hornets made it 8-2 in the eighth after an RBI double by junior Jesse Schmidt. Senior Tim Reimer drew a walk and then advanced to third on a fielding error by third baseman Andrew Smith. Schmidt followed with a drive that bounced off of the right-field wall.
The Dons increased their lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the inning after a two-run home run to right center by Howard.
Sacramento State added another run in the ninth inning after an RBi double by sophomore Pedro Santiago.
Schmidt recorded his 12th outfield assist in the sixth inning when he gunned down Jacobitz at the plate on a tag-up attempt. The San Diego native surpassed Mario Cellilo (10, 1992) for the Div. I program lead.
Senior Tim Reimer''s personal-best hitting streak ended at 13 games after finishing 0-for-3 with two walks. The San Jose native recorded the Hornets second-highest streak on the season behind Schmidt''s program-record 24.
Kevin Annis (7-3) earned the win after allowing only one hit while walking three and striking out five in five innings.
Junior Marshall Plouffe (6-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out two in four innings of work.
Junior John Acha led the Hornet offense by finishing 3-for-4 from the plate. Schmidt (2-for-4) also finished with multiple hits to contribute to the squad.
Sacramento State and San Francisco will play its final game of the 2003 season at Hornet Field on Sunday, May 18, at 1 p.m. The contest will be Senior and Fan Appreciation Day for Sacramento State.
