UC DAVIS EVENS SERIES WITH 5-3 WIN OVER BASEBALL

3/10/2007

DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis scored three runs in the fourth inning and added two more runs for a 5-3 win over Sacramento State, Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Field. The Aggie victory evened the three-game series at 1-1.

UC Davis improved to 5-11 with the win while the Hornets dropped to 5-12.

Sacramento State scored the game’s first run when Patrick Cummins crossed the plate on a Gabe Jacobo ground out. Cummings led off the game with a single to right field and was moved to second on a sacrifice. Another bunt moved him to third before scoring the run.

The Hornet lead lasted until the fourth when the Aggies took control. Brandon Oliver opened with a bunt single and moved to second on a single from Daniel Descalso. A single to left from Aaron Hanke loaded the bases with no outs before Evan Hudson hit a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game. Kevin James hit a second sacrifice fly to plate Descalso and Matt Van Orden ended the rally with a double to right center.

The 3-1 lead was plenty for UCD starter Trevor Fox. The left-hander threw seven innings and scattered five hits and one earned run to improve to 2-3 on the season. Fox also struck out six while walking two.

Sacramento State pulled within one run with a run in the sixth inning. Ryan Blair singled to left, stole second and then moved to third on a fly ball to set up the run. He was knocked home by pinch hitter Wes Oberlin who singled up the middle.

The Aggies got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on a leadoff home run from Descalso.

The Hornets had a chance to retake the lead in the seventh but left the bases loaded. With two outs and a runner on first, Cummins singled to left. Travis Kirkman then reached on an error by shortstop Matt Dempsey to load the bases. Fox then got Ryan Blair to pop up to short to end the inning.

UC Davis scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Ryan Royster which scored Dempsey.

In the ninth inning, Sacramento State scored one run but could pull no closer. Jeff Hannah opened the frame with a double to left and scored on a single up the middle by Brian Boyd.

Freshman Trevor York dropped to 0-3 with the loss. York threw six innings allowing 10 hits and four earned runs.

Cummins was the lone Hornet to record multiple hits in the game. The senior finished 2-for-5, marking his fifth straight multi-hit game.

The three-game series returns to Sacramento State on Sunday. The game will begin at 1 p.m.
